Never thought to make the Neko/Morrissey comparison, but now that you’ve said it, it feels almost obvious. I, too, have cut him out. It’s been fascinating living in L.A. the last few years, where he’s still a cultural idol for a lot of Mexican-Americans. I want to yell, “But he loathes your existence!” — but the connection there is deep and unusual.

I'm genuinely relieved that you hear what I'm talking about. I thought maybe I was nuts. The Mexican/Morrissey thing has always been fascinating and endearing. Now it just makes me sad.

I had to let Morrissey go in 2019 for all the reasons you talk about, and I was so sad about it. Then the universe did me a small kindness. I was traveling for work and connecting through London, staying at an airport hotel by Heathrow. It was during the Glastonbury festival so one of the BBC channels was running the whole thing live. And of all things, Johnny Marr was doing a solo set, and he was playing and singing Smiths covers. And it was LOVELY. That's the best word for it. So whenever I need to hear "There is a Light that Never Goes Out," I can turn to the Johnny Marr version; I get to keep the song AND avoid awful associations.

Yeah, I heard he'd been playing smiths tunes lately. I should look that up. Marr seems like a genuinely solid, low maintenance dude.
