Yeah, it's like a food you rarely want, but when you want it, nothing else hits the spot. But in limited doses. Hardcore should only be released in EP form.
Re: Guided by Voices, I'm very much in the same boat as I stopped paying close attention nearly 30 years ago. Magnet magazine just published a 500 best GBV and GBV-adjacent songs list. I've only made it a little less than halfway through (yes, really, why do you ask?), but I've been pretty impressed so far.
I listen to pretty much all the new GBV albums and enjoy them all, but...it never fully "sticks". The last song of theirs that I played on repeat was The Rally Boys.
I dunno man, Janes Addiction was HUGE in my life as a youngster and... this new stuff does absolutely nothing for me. No shade on them at all for continuing to make music but IMO the magic well they tapped in that 88 - 92 period is long dry. But you know what they say, everybody has their own opinion, everybody has their own opinion
Oh, I fully agree that it's nothing special. But at least it sounds like a un-special version of the band I used to love, rather than the cornball Entourage theme bullshit.
I found myself singing a made up song to my cat Otto using his name and then realized the melody was from Paul Stanley and Desmond Child's theme song for Shocker as the Dudes of Wrath. Totally random subconscious pull from some nook in my brain.
Yeah, I spent a bit of time on their wiki page. People have such a rose-colored view of 60s rock. Average small town teens were listening to this garbage a lot more than the Velvet Underground or whatever.
"Jessie" by Paw
"Dogsong" by The Be Good Tanyas (this one is sad)
"Dogsong 2" by The Be Good Tanyas (this one is sadder)
“Mirage” is that thing you need every once in a while to keep yourself healthy.

Shouldn't Happen to a Dog - Thee Headcoats
The Sharpest Claws - The Dirtbombs

Oh yeah, the more obscure a dog-song cover, the better. I'm listening to that song now and it is...not very good!
You are correct, sir. It is terrible.
None of the Pharaohs were actually Arabic. Band leader Domingo "Sam" Samudio was Latino, but that's as close as it got.
So that cover is basically cultural appropriation.
