Coming back here to note that I went to a Coheed & Cambria show last weekend after really getting into them from this newsletter! Amazing artists and great fans! Thanks for introducing me to them!

Also, on the subject of gimmicks, as you know, my favorite childhood band was KISS, and my favorite grownup band is The Cure. I don't insist that my favorite bands wear a lot of makeup, but the numbers don't lie...

I'm going to have to listen to more of Zola Jesus, of whom I had never heard. I enjoy that feeling she evokes. I also liked Ding Dong Ditch.

I once wrote of Taylor Swift that, musically, not only do her carrots not touch her peas, but her gravy doesn't touch her potatoes. They serve it on the side and then have the audacity to call it potatoes and gravy. I was trying to describe a lack of alchemy in her music. Even though Coheed sounds nothing like Taylor Swift, I found myself recalling the description and finding it apt. Guitars that chug, drums that bash, vocals that screech, and never the 'tween shall meet. Zola Jesus is like mashed potatoes with actual garlic bulbs in there. No butter or gravy, but it makes sense in the way of elevated cuisine. And Ding Dong Ditch is like - wait for it - a Ding Dong because it has Ding Dong in the name.
